Happy New Year, friends! Our January 2024 episode comes to you from the beach! Recorded at the Blue Heron Motel in Nags Head, North Carolina, we’ve got eleven great new songs for you… we hope they’ll be a great start to your new year.
Put your headphones on! For December, our playlist features songs that require your attention… your undivided attention. So plug in, lay back, get under the covers, and get lost in eleven dark and moody songs that we’ve found for you this month.
This month, both Al and Phoebe might have ended up liking each other’s songs maybe more than their own. Here’s November’s version of our playlist, with some obscure tunes and whatever else we’ve been listing to in the last month.
A lot of older songs this month means a lot fewer videos for you to see, but we’ve got another great mix of songs, a few you might’ve heard before, but a lot of pretty obscure ones too. That’s sort of what we like best.
Special note! Check out Al and Phoebe’s interview on the September 28 episode of the Drink O’Clock Podcast! From their website: “Established in 2022, Drink O’Clock was created by Rob “MaxABV” Valincius. MaxABV was originally Rob Valincius’ streamer personality on Twitch, which he felt he could carry over as his podcast host nickname. Drink O’Clock started originally as a podcast strictly for streamers, esports pros, and social media personalities. After a few episodes, MaxABV felt it would be fun to open the scope to anyone he finds interesting. Since then, we’ve had everything from erotica writers to professional cuddlers on the show. We will continue to get the most interesting guests possible as the show grows!” We had such a blast talking to Rob, and we love his show. We hope you’ll give him a listen!
September seems like a fine month for Phoebe to show off her inner Emo. Also, Al gets mad because Phoebe stole his favorite song, and both discuss their song selection criteria.
Our August episode features our usual eleven songs that we pick during our playlist ceremony, as well as discussions about some of the songs we didn’t pick. As well as a scholarly discussion about Muppet types.
This month we’ve got some old songs that sound like new songs, some new songs that sound like they’re ageless, some slow songs that sound like they’re about the burst forth with intensity. And more than one song whose live video is maybe better than the studio track.
Our June playlist brings a few old favorites back, and adds a bunch of new artists as well. Smog (AKA Bill Callahan), Molly Tuttle, Rufus Wainwright, and Andrew Bird have all been heard before (and The Roches have songwriting credits), but everyone else is new this month. Take a listen to us talking about these songs, and let us know what you think.
May brings you our second cover-themed playlist. We weren’t just looking for good versions of good songs… for us, a good cover song has to take you somewhere new. It should take an existing song, break it down and then reassemble it as something different. During the podcast, we’ll talk about what we think makes for a good cover.
