November 2024

After bringing you a bunch of returning artists last month, Phoebe brought all new musicians to her submissions for our November playlist. Al contributed some new ones too, as well as new releases from our two most honored artists. We hope you enjoy these eleven songs.

Show notes from our November 2024 Spotify Podcast:

We started with Phoebe’s ten submissions and Al’s ten submissions, but our finished, 11-song playlist is put in an order that we think makes sense musically. Which is not same same order that we pick the songs during the picking ceremony heard during our podcast.

Song notes (Quotes are from song lyrics):

  1. “To build your own house, might be the best, like some kind of God, with a fence all around, a fence all around, but don’t forget to put in a gate”

Back for his seventh appearance, Bill Callahan brings us a new, live version of his 2001 Smog song, “Keep Some Steady Friends Around”.

  2. “I’m the last one you need to be worried about, falling in and out of myself just like everyone else”

We both love Hannah Georgas’ video for “Beautiful View”. It brings a fresh and genuine take to this song.

  3. “Have I moved far enough yet? To be granted some wisdom, to be granted grace”

Keenan O’Meara’s minimal Spotify bio reads only “Born in Maryland, living in Shandaken. Unmotivated naturalist. Writing songs instead. “A Little More Time” feels like it comes from that.

  4. “My boy, my boy, don’t lie to me, tell me where did you sleep last night”

Blurring the lines between genres, Jake Blount calls the music he makes “Afrofuturist folklore”. “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” is a great take on the Lead Belly classic.

  5. “If only to connect with you one day”

North Carolina’s Floating Action is mostly the work of lyricist/songwriter/recorder/producer Seth Kauffman. “To Connect” is their/his first appearance in ur playlist.

  6. “You have teeth I can’t bear, I am out of here, I have teeth I must bare, I am out of here”

Thao Nguyen and Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn’s “Teeth” is another newcomer. This 2011 album was their only collaboration.

  7. “Caterpillar, take me with you, take the pain, I’ll take it with you, I’ll see you on the other side, caterpillar, take me with you”

Once in a while, we both pick the exact same song for a specific month. Julie Odell’s “Caterpillar” was well-liked by both of us.

  8. “And pain will be on every map, just like north is, pain will be in every year, just like August, and if you get everything right, then there’s nothing else left”

“Just Like North” brings Al’s perennial favorite Angie McMahon back again for her record eighth appearance.

  9. “I once believed, you were all that I need, now I know that won’t do, I still love you but need to learn to be alone”

This is Adam Remnant’s first appearance, but apparently Al had submitted an earlier song of his to a previous playlist and then forgot who he was. Oops. According to Spotify, Adam is big in Helsinki.

  10. “Yes, I’ll be your girlfriend, just by the morning, I’ll burn my body anew”

Sara Marie Rorie is from Virginia, but we weren’t really able to find out much about her. Other than that we both like “Olive” a lot.

  11. “Is there something you’re willing to wait for? Is there something you long to be? Is there something I can do to change it? Didn’t it used to be me?”

The lovely harmonies that Skylar Gudasz, Kate Rhudy, and Libby Rodenbough bring on “Supposed to Make You Happy”… make us happy.

Both our Spotify playlist and our podcast are updated and released around the first of each month. We’re recorded monthly in the warm and cozy hug of the OML Studios in lovely downtown Manchester, Richmond, Virginia.

Thanks to Gentleman Jack Double Mellowed Tennessee Whiskey for help in recording this month. Theme music is from “Red Eye” by E’s Jammy Jams, accordion music by Andrew Huang. Tarte Tatin by Blue Dot Sessions. Molly Molly by Blue Dot Sessions. TJ Elwood by Blue Dot Sessions.
