December 2024

This month’s additions feature six new artists to our playlist, and five acts who are back for their second appearance. (And one new version of a previously heard song). Also, this month we’re changing our format around a little… a little less of the playlist play-by-play, and a little more general talking about various music stuff. We’re still loving making our Spotify playlist every month, but wanted to shake things up a little here on “the pod”. Hope you enjoy!

Show notes from our December 2024 Spotify Podcast:

We started with Al’s ten submissions and Phoebe’s ten submissions. We narrowed those submissions down and eventually ended up with these eleven songs…

Song notes (Quotes are from song lyrics):

  1. “I’m so tired of playing, playing with this bow and arrow, gonna give my heart away, leave it to the other girls to play, for I’ve been a temptress too long”

We’ve featured the John Martyn cover of this song back in 2021, but here’s the Portishead original of “Glory Box”.

  2. “And while I’m shades of flattered at some bedside table banter, oh, I fear I’m doing better with no hands to comfort me”

The wonderful Odie Leigh is back for her second appearance in our playlist. What a great vocalist she is! And “Chutes & Ladders” might be our favorite of hers.

  3. “But nothing heals the past like time, and they can’t steal the love you’re born to find”

West Virginia-based Dalchord is a band not many people seem to know about, and we’re not sure why. Their music is smart and thoughtful and fun to listen to.

  4. “Sometimes a wind comes out of nowhere and knocks you sideways, and look, see my tears, they fill the whole night sky”

Bruce Cockburn has one of those voices that’s both instantly recognizable and wonderfully comforting. “The Whole Night Sky” is his second appearance here.

  5. “Hey, we all make our choices, and break our own horses, are you hearing me say all this?”

The Ballroom Thieves are Calin Peters and Martin Earley. Lady Lamb is Aly Spaltro. Together, their song “Woman” is a welcome new find for our playlist.

  6. “I’ve never known a script quite like yours, where there’s no battle just a trojan horse, it felt like a gust of wind just about did you in”

Another second appearance artist, Anna Ash is back with “Favorite Part”. The video of this one is another example of a song that’s probably better than the studio version.

  7. “What a duo, what a duo, what a two”

Our fifth and final second appearance artist is the wonderful This Is The Kit, a Big Al favorite, and a Phoebe example of a better video version.

  8. “A man in love ain’t mine for the taking, but if he comes my way lord I’m gonna shake him”

Rachel Baiman, soulful singing and banjo playing on “I Could’ve Been Your Lover Too” makes a great fit with our playlist.

  9. “She loves to walk old shoppers, she was sellin’ jalapeño poppers, you caught her outside whispering to grasshoppers, you think she’s pretty, so go on and talk to her”

“Lucky” by Los Angeles-based Atta Boy is such a fun and compelling song. And the quirky video fits in well with their quirky vibe.

  10. “There’s twenty mosquitos in my house, and you’re sittin’ on my couch, guess that makes twenty-one”

Nashville-based Cale Tyson is a smart, funny, and engaging singer/songwriter. We hope we can hear more from him, but “Not Healthy Anymore” is a great first listen.

  11. “The only way to leave this life’s by killing everything you do, so I pressed my heels into the ground, and in the dirt they left that mark”

The Eric Terino (assisted by our friend Jolie Holland) song “Mark (Saint Francis Blues)” might be the best song in our playlist this month, so we wrap things up with it.

Both our Spotify playlist and our podcast are updated and released around the first of each month. We’re recorded monthly in the warm and cozy hug of the OML Studios in lovely downtown Manchester, Richmond, Virginia.

During our show, we also talked about some other music that didn’t get included in our official, finished playlist. Here are a few of the other songs we mentioned, as well as the Lowell George documentary that we talked about. And give yourself a present today, and get yourself a little Payback.

Thanks to Whistlepig Piggy Back Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey for help in recording this month. Theme music is from “Red Eye” by E’s Jammy Jams. Contrarian by Blue Dot Sessions. La Naranja Borriana by Blue Dot Sessions. Flashing Runner by Blue Dot Sessions. Willow Willow by Blue Dot Sessions. Palms Down by Blue Dot Sessions.
