January 2025

Where in the podcast universe can you find Vic Chesnutt, Howlin’ Wolf, Lemoncello, and Doeschii, all in the same episode? You’re lookin’ at it! Our first playlist of the new year brings a great variety of artists… seven returning ones, and four great new additions too!

Show notes from our January 2025 Spotify Podcast:

We started with Phoebe’s ten submissions and Al’s ten submissions, We narrowed those submissions down and eventually ended up with these eleven songs…

Song notes (Quotes are from song lyrics):

  1. “I have had my fun, and if I never get well no more, well my health it’s failing on me, yes, I’m going down slow”

When you put Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, and Howlin’ Wolf in the same room, you’re gonna get some fireworks. Check out this 1972 recording of “Goin’ Down Slow”.

  2. “Side by side losing everything, we were just a pair of kids, oh, the stupid things we did in the madness they were calling the revolution”

We’ve loved Frazey Ford since her Be Good Tanyas days, and “Lost Together” from 2010’s Obadiah is another strong showing for her.

  3. “Built a king on compliments, charisma and advertisements, still they see him shimmy ephemeral, it ain’t supernatural”

The legendary Vic Chesnutt has been in our playlist before, and we’re very happy to have him back with “Supernatural”.

  4. “Fuck the private school lunch ladies, the crackers who wouldn’t play with me, bitches who tried to jump me for believing I was something, just don’t fuck with me”

Phoebe’s favorite new artist Doechii is a fantastic new addition to our playlist. She’s a huge talent and a wonderful presence. Her Tiny Desk appearance is worth spending some time with.

  5. “It’s my home, last night I dreamt that I grew wings, I found a place, where they could hear me when I sing”

Josh Ritter’s intelligent and thoughtful lyrics are always a welcome addition here. This live version of “Wings” shows him at his best.

  6. “She learned it from a book, suiters approach, receive dirty looks, calling on her for good or grief, these types of fools who beg and never read”

We’re very happy to have Portland-based Horse Feathers back for their second appearance with “Rude to Rile”.

  7. “Not asking of me anything, saying nothing about what it means, without anybody telling me how I should feel”

JOSEPH’s cover of Jimmy Eat World’s “Table For Glasses” is a great Phoebe addition for this month.

  8. “And you could appear around any corner, as you often do, but no one knows their neighbours in the city”

There are a few really great videos this month, and this Lemoncello concert video is a winner. If you enjoy them, please check out the whole video… we would both love to be able to see them live one day.

  9. “I have spread my dreams under your feet, tread softly because you tread on my dreams”

This is also a second appearance for New Zealand’s Tiny Ruins, AKA Hollie Fullbrook.

  10. “The older I am, the wiser I’m not”

This is one of those months when we’re jam-packed with repeat appearances. Blake Mills is back for the third time with “Don’t Tell Our Friends About Me”.

  11. “Oh Oliver, you cannot see the vulnerable hold you have over me”

Brooke Bentham’s lovely “Oliver” seemed like a lice way to conclude our playlist this month.

Both our Spotify playlist and our podcast are updated and released around the first of each month. We’re recorded monthly in the warm and cozy hug of the OML Studios in lovely downtown Manchester, Richmond, Virginia.

During our show, we also talked about some other music that didn’t get included in our official, finished playlist. If you want to listen to some of that, you can check those out here. We talked a good bit about Doechi, and we wanted to include some links about her here. Doechii Talks “Alligator Bites Never Heal”, The Rolling Stone article that featured her and Brittany Howard, Her performance on Colbert, The Breakdown, Interview with Zane Lowe.

Thanks to Gentleman Jack Double Mellowed Tennessee Whiskey for help in recording this month. Theme music is from “Red Eye” by E’s Jammy Jams. Chopin – Mazurka Op6No2 by Blue Dot Sessions. Access Road 442 by Blue Dot Sessions. In Passage by Blue Dot Sessions. On Top of It by Blue Dot Sessions. Lumber Down by Blue Dot Sessions. Dino De Deus by Blue Dot Sessions. Also, we neglected to mention some upcoming events: In just a couple of weeks, we’ll be releasing our every-eleven-month Greatest Hits playlist (this time: Volume Five!), featuring eleven great songs from March 2024 through January 2025, along with a special podcast episode. And we’re planning another Unconventional Covers playlist that we’ll bring you in March. So please keep an eye and an ear out for those.

Questions? Suggestions? Submissions? Drop us an email! As always, thanks for listening, and see you next month!
